Womens Suits – What to Choose?

Womens suits are probably the easiest and smartest style of work wear available but they can also be worn for the evening or occasion wear. A suit usually describes a tailored jacket which is worn with a matching skirt, dress or trousers. They can worn in a variety of colours but black, brown, grey and navy women’s suits are the most popular for work wear as they are classic and versatile colours that go with a variety of different coloured blouses or tops.

Throughout history the fashion for womens suits has changed from the classic tweed suit designed by Coco Chanel in the fifties to the power suits of the eighties and nineties. A suit is probably one of the most flattering alternatives for women as long as they choose the right style. The tailoring skims over any lumps or bumps creating a smooth silhouette.

Suits are often mix and match so you can buy a jacket and your choice of different styles of skirt or trousers. For work wear it is often a good idea to buy an extra pair of trousers or a skirt as they will need washing more often and so wear out quicker. The skirt or trousers can also be worn with knitwear or cardigans for a slightly more casual look. Occasion suits usually have more elaborate or patterned jackets which are usually worn with skirts in bright or pastel colours.

There are a variety of different styles of tailored jacket that can be worn with a suit including collared and collarless, double and single breasted, long, medium or cropped styles and those with belts or other details. A collarless jacket with a round neck looks best on ladies with a smaller bust. Those with a bigger bust tend to look better in jackets with a V neck and collar. A collar is also a great way to disguise and draw attention away from the neck and up towards the face. Double breasted jackets look best on taller ladies whilst shorter or petite ladies are much more suited to single breasted. The length and fit of the jacket is really important. Different lengths and fits will suit different body shapes and it is well worth trying out a variety of styles to see which looks best.

Trousers suits are a modern and practical choice for work. The boot cut or straight cut trouser being the most popular choice for most body shapes as it is so flattering. These styles are particularly effective at balancing out wider hips. For taller and more slender ladies the tapered or peg leg style of trousers is also very on trend.

Women’s skirt suits usually consist of a jacket with either an a line skirt or a straight skirt. A straight skirt looks smart and business like and suits a variety of body types. An a line skirt works particularly well for those with larger hips and thighs.

A shift dress is often worn with a tailored jacket for a business or occasion suit. This is a really smart and streamlined look and is especially flattering for petite ladies who may find a separate coloured blouse worn with a skirt or trousers cuts their bodies in two and makes them appear shorter.

If you cannot find a suit with a jacket and skirt or trousers to fit and compliment your body shape, you could always try buying the skirt or trousers and jacket separately as long as you choose a neutral colour like black or navy that is easy to match.
